Super Tools - Bridges Premieres:
Sunday, March 19 @ 11pm ET/PT on the History
Channel
Building a bridge requires utilizing the same materials and manpower as any
mega-construction project. But you also have to do it on water! We'll travel to the new
Woodrow Wilson Bridge that connects Virginia to Maryland across the Potomac River to see
how it's done. And it certainly fits the bill as a mega-bridge: to accommodate 300,000
vehicles a day, this bridge will have 12 lanes of traffic covering a total surface area as
big as 25 football fields. In all, it'll take more than 45 million pounds of steel, 1,200
workers, and eight years to build this bridge. To get a tool's-eye view of just how a
mega-bridge like this gets built, we're focusing on these kings of construction: the
clamshell dredge, the pile driver, the concrete truck, steel cable, and the submerged arc
welder. TVPG cc

The long-delayed completion of the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge
will be pushed back another six to seven months in an effort to hold down the cost of the
single-tower suspension bridge that is the final piece of the project, Caltrans announced
Thursday.
At a news conference at the staging area for bridge construction,
Caltrans Director Will Kempton said the agency would:
-- Give contractors until March 22 to bid on the tower and self-anchored
deck that will connect the skyway segment of the span, now under construction, with Yerba
Buena Island. Bids had been due Feb. 1. The estimated cost is $1.45 billion.
